Funded citizen science projects in 2019
The Flemish governement launched a second call for funding for citizen science projects in Spring 2019 with a total budget of 1 milion euros. In total 53 projects were submitted to the call. In January 2020 the department of Economy, Sciences and Innovation announced the seven selected projects, each receiving 150.000 euro. Find out more about the projects in our projects-section.
1. S.O.S. Antwerp
Researchers and citizens study social inequality related to death in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by jointly creating and analyzing a unique database of causes of death for the Antwerp population.
2. CuriousNoses in the Garden
The project aspires a large-scale awareness-raising on climate adaptation and drought. It will simultaneously collect an extensive and internationally unique scientific data set on the impact of increasing summer drought.
3. Bugs 2 the rescue
Youth and wildlife volunteers work with scientists in the search for natural enemies to manage invasive alien aquatic plants.
4. Snapp nature
The mobile application tells you in a snap which animal or plant you have in front of your lens, what others saw in your area and how each snap contributes to our knowledge about our nature.
5. B&Bee
The AskBee application (Everything for a handsome and Bee-friendly garden) determines the most optimal bee-friendly plant mix for the garden, based on the location of the garden.
6. AstroSounds
Stars vibrate in a typical way. We can classify them based on their timbre. AstroSounds wants to allow citizens, students and their teachers to analyze stars by having them listen to stars.
7. Stiemerlab
Real-time monitoring by citizens of physico-chemical and microbiological indicators of water quality of the Stiemerbeek in Genk to gain insight into the recovering nature of the stream after overflows from the sewers.
