- Workshop

In response to the need identified by UNESCO to support countries who seek to develop policies in open science to society, there will be a hybrid workshop on 5 October 2022 to share the experiences from those countries/regions who have already recognised the value and power of science working in collaboration with their communities.

Workshops objectives:

- Share experiences and lessons learned on opening science to society via (open) science policy.

- Identify needs of policy makers for progressing citizen science into (open) science policy, as input for the UNESCO OS WG on policy.

The global Citizen Science and Open Science Community of Practice, in collaboration with the UNESCO Natural Sciences sector, invites policy makers and those wishing to maximise the benefits from implementing the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science in full to join this workshop.

We will be hearing about the experiences and lessons from the EU, US and other countries already successfully opening science to society. We will discuss HOW to progress citizen science/community science/participatory science into policy and practice. Speaking from both the research and policy perspectives, our presenters will describe the most powerful examples which have delivered real value into their strategic plans.

Together we will discuss some of the burning questions, identify priority challenges for engaging society through (open society) policy, and describe the work the CS&OS CoP will be doing to provide references and develop guidelines with UNESCO.

The workshop will be held at the Berlin Natural History Museum on 5 October 2022, 2 - 4 pm CEST. Please register here to participate in the workshop.

Anyone attending in person will be able to see citizen science at its most innovative and informative at the ECSA conference which is happening straight after the workshop.
