Palaeontologica Belgica

'Palaeontologica Belgica' vzw. is a scientific research organisation, actively involved in the promotion, support, popularisation and protection of Belgian paleontology in its broadest sense.

Palaeontologica Belgica' is a scientific research organisation who actively promotes, supports, popularises and protects Belgian palaeontology in all its facets. The organisation was founded in 2020 and is a non-profit association (vzw) that operates independently. Its founding members come from different Belgian geo-scientific organisations and work projectwise on various paleontological initiatives.

In addition to a good cooperation with federal research institutions, the academic world and international organisations, a great deal of attention is also aimed to 'citizen science' and outreach to the general public. Each year, Palaeontologica Belgica nominates a citizen scientist who made an outstanding contribution to Belgian palaeontology. The prize is named after Louis De Pauw (1844-1918), autodidact and former head preparator of the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels. He played a major role in the salvage and display of the Iguanodons of Bernissart and the mammoth of Lier. Historically, the most iconic masterpieces of Belgian palaeontology.
