Royal Observatory of Belgium

The Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) is one of the oldest federal research institutes of our country and belongs to the Belgian Science Policy Office ("Belspo"). KSB researchers study planet Earth, the sun, our solar system, as well as other stars, planets and objects from the near and far universe. High-level scientific research in astronomy, planetology, geophysics, seismology, space geodesy and solar physics is alternated with service and science dissemination.

Among the scientific disciplines of the ROB we find astronomy, planetology, geophysics, seismology, gravimetry, space geodesy and solar physics. The Royal Observatory of Belgium has a large library and also runs the Planetarium on the Heysel. Besides its scientific activities, the ROB also carries out service activities including time service, management of the Belgian seismological network, integration of the Belgian GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems, such as GPS) network into international reference systems, performing gravimetric measurements, continuous observation of solar activity, forecasting space weather and disseminating information on astronomical phenomena.
Citizen science and crowdsourcing have long been part of the high-level research carried out at KSB.
