At the end of 2017, Roger Van Overstraeten Society (RVO-Society) was mandated by the Flemish government to start a knowledge center for citizen science. After extensive preparation within RVO-Society, Scivil was founded in 2019.
In May 2020, RVO-Society split off its long-running and successful STEM expertise into a new brand: 'Brightlab'. Since then, RVO-Society is home to two unique, but strongly interconnected teams: Brightlab and Scivil.
RVO-Society, Scivil and Brightlab are housed in imec's offices in Leuven.
Scivil is advised by a committee of 22 citizen science experts and representatives of Flemish research institutions.
