First Plane Tree Check campaign in Belgium concludes
The Plane Tree Check measurement campaign ended on 4 May. The first Belgian edition of this citizen science campaign has already been a success! Across the country, more than 420 samples have now been submitted. We would like to warmly thank all participants. Without them, this research would not have been possible.
For Plane Tree Check, Scivil, the University of Antwerp, UCLouvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) joined forces to measure particulate matter using plane tree bark. Plane trees trap fine dust in their bark. When the bark starts to peel in spring, it offers a perfect opportunity to collect it. Bark samples can still be brought to various collection points until 15 May. During the summer months, Prof. Roeland Samson’s team will analyse the fine dust content of the bark samples. In this way, you can help map air pollution in your neighbourhood by collecting flakes of plane tree bark. We will publish the results in autumn on the Plane Tree Check website.
