Citizen science in Horizon Europe funding

Horizon Europe is the EU research and innovation program for the 2021-2027 period. It focuses on 5 main missions.
Citizen science calls can be found in the Funding and Tenders portal.

Furthermore, Citizen Science may also be used as a research method in other calls under the European funding programs.

To the call

Some tips for successfully integrating citizen science into a Horizon Europe proposal:

  • Involve relevant stakeholders and specific citizen target groups.
  • Embrace open science practices and explain, with concrete examples or tools, how you will implement them.
  • Use ethical and inclusive methodologies, with attention to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Outline a realistic impact pathway.
  • Clearly describe how you will ensure data management and data quality.

When involving citizens in your project proposal, be specific about:

  • Why? Explain the added value of citizen involvement and the benefits for both citizens and the research.
  • When? Indicate at which stages of the research citizens will be involved and for how long.
  • Who? There is no such thing as "the general public" as a single group. Be specific about your target audiences.
  • What support will participating citizens receive? (e.g. training, tools, community-building activities)
  • How will citizens' contributions to the research be recognized and used?
