Buren Meten Hoogspanningslijnen ('Citizens Measure High-voltage Power Lines')

Actief 2025 – heden

Scivil is joining forces with the imec-UGent research group  WAVES for CitizenELF. High-voltage power lines generate extremely low-frequency (ELF) magnetic fields. The strength of these fields depends on the amount of electricity being transmitted and the distance from the source. With high-voltage power lines, the magnetic fields are therefore strongest directly beneath the line. And it is this strength that we now want to measure.

Hoogspanningslijn

Why this study?

A lot of research has already been carried out into the potential health effects of living near high-voltage power lines. To date, no causal link has been established between ELF magnetic fields and health effects.

This new study has been commissioned by the Flemish Department of Environment and is based on the precautionary principle. Under this principle, we aim to avoid situations involving long-term exposure to elevated ELF magnetic fields as much as possible. With this study, we therefore aim to map out the actual situation in Flanders using concrete figures.

How can I take part?

More information on the project and how to take part can be found on the website of the Flemish Government.

In the first stage of the project, we organise measuring campaigns in Leuven (region of Kessel-Lo and region of Wilsele) and Ghent (region of Wondelgem). Before we get started with the campaign, we organise local information sessions. Use this form to sign up for one of these information sessions.
