¿Burgerpraat! (Citizens' talk)

People are natural experts in spoken communication. Computers can also learn languages. Skills that are obvious to humans, such as intonation, mood and personality of the speaker, are harder to interpret for computers and artificial intelligence. ¿Burgerpraat! (Citizens' talk) wants to use these human skills to make machines smarter and teach them these skills as well.

Burgerpraat (Citizens' talk)

At the moment, speech technology and language technology are capable of understanding and interpreting Dutch. The current technology is not yet able to interpret emotions and personality from video and audio reels. This would however be very useful technology, for instance in healthcare, HR and education. The project wants to take the first steps towards this new form of technology, by using machine learning techniques that interpret verbal and non-verbal elements.

Via machine learning, computers could be able to derive personality and emotional aspects from language. A large database with annotated examples is necessary to make this possible. The project asks a thousand citizens to make a video recording of themselves, answering questions. These volunteers also receive instructions on communication styles, personality types and how to annotate video recordings according to scientific norms.
