Hasselt University (UHasselt) is a young (2005), independent and innovative University which is regionally anchored and has a pronounced regional, national and international orientation and is happy to call itself a civic University. Hasselt University has a long tradition of paying attention to research careers. In 2007 the university was one of the first Flemish universities to subscribe the Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers from the European Commission. Hasselt University obtained the “HR Excellence in Research” label of the European Commission in 2011.

The overall objective is to combine academic excellence with economic and social relevance. Academic and scientific freedom, social engagement and attention for ethical standards are the basic principles of Hasselt University’s research and education policy. Today, Hasselt University has six faculties, one School and six research institutes.
Hasselt University is a research-oriented university with excellent scores on the amount of external research income, the amount of research publications, the number of top-cited publications and the number of post-doc positions with specific strengths in maintaining durable collaborations with industrial partners. It offers a strong international learning and working environment for students and staff. About 38% of the PhD students at Hasselt University are from outside Belgium and 12% of the academic staff is international. Staff members perform research and educational tasks, but are also encouraged to actively engage in innovation, entrepreneurship and societal services. Students are introduced to and participate in research during their bachelor’s and master’s program. Hasselt University regards it as its social responsibility to contribute actively to a sustainable and innovative region. Hasselt University therefore attaches great importance to cooperation with other centers of expertise, companies, government agencies and organizations in Limburg and beyond.
In 2018, Hasselt University closed 770 research contracts with the industry worth 15.5 million euros. UHasselt has 35 active patents in portfolio and 15 license agreements and now counts 11 active spin-offs. The Tech Transfer Office works closely with business developers in the different research domains to stimulate cooperation between researchers and industry.
Hasselt University also pays a lot of attention to the creation of equal opportunities for women and men in research. A policy plan on gender issues has been developed which describes actions to ameliorate recruitment and promotion of both women and men and to improve the balance between work and family. This plan urgently needs to be followed-up upon and new targeted gender & equity policy actions are welcomed by the Rectorial Board as well as the Faculty Authorities.
