Stiemerlab
Did you know that the Stiemerbeek in Genk is 16 km long? It flows right through Genk. Researchers want to know how the city and its sewerage system influence the water quality and biodiversity of the Stiemerbeek. Scientists enlist the help of local residents and local organizations to measure water quality using sensors and water samples.
During heavy rainfall, the Stiemer (Genk) is regularly polluted by overflowing the sewers. With Stiemerlab, citizen scientists measure the water quality of the Stiemer through stake-taking and electronic sensors. Citizen scientists also contribute to public awareness of the water quality of the Stiemer in public events and interventions.
