Roots and Recipes: The Science of Food, Identity and Belonging
Roots & Recipes is part of the European Researchers', Europe's largest celebration of Science and Research. Together with the AfricaMuseum, The FoodBridge, Botanical Garden Meise, and KU Leuven, Scivil joins forces to connect citizens to a topic that is maybe a bit unknown.... the African food culture.
What is Roots & Recipes about?
During 2 days visitors can discover the world of food through science, culture, food tasting, and hands-on experiences. We place African food and food traditions right in the center, and look at the roles citizens, indigenous knowledge, and citizen science can play in research.
There is also the "Scientists at School" program, in which pupils and teachers learn about the rich food culture of the African continent through citizen science activities.
What to expect?
In 2026 European Researchers' Night runs the course of 2 days. the event is free and suitable for young and old. Expect:
- A big citizen Science Fair centered around African food
- Workshops for children of 6 and up (grown ups also welcomed)
